It was founded on June 4, 1953 by Indonesian insurance industry figures such as Soeparjan, the late Willy Wuwungan, the late Lie Kian Seng, the late Prof. Dr. TSG Mulia, the late Bahar Nasution, the late Th. S. T. Gautama, and the late Idham.

In 1980, AJB Bumiputera 1912 became Marein’s major shareholder and was followed by other insurance companies such as PT Asuransi Jiwa Panin Putera and PT Asuransi Jiwa Bumi Asih Jaya. In 1986, Marein successfully apportioned its dividends to shareholders for the first time. In 1988, PT Dharmala Sakti Sejahtera became the primary shareholder of Marein. On June 25, 1989, Marein became the first go public reinsurance company in Indonesia. On March 24, 1990, Marein was granted permission by the Capital Market Institutions Supervisory Agency to execute its first right issue, by raising the paid-up capital from Rp 7 billion to Rp 9.1 billion. On May 25, 1990, a decision was made at the General Meeting of Shareholders to raise the authorized capital from Rp 10 billion to Rp 30 billion.

In 1993, Marein moved to a new own building named Graha Marein located at Jl. Palmerah Utara No. 100, Jakarta 11480. In line with the requirement for Sharia Reinsurance, Marein set up a Sharia branch and operated as per Finance Ministry Decree No. KEP-075/ KM/12/2006 on August 25, 2006.
